China leads international standards for smart locks, breaking barriers to smart home interconnection

China's first international standard for smart locks, formulated under the leadership of multiple stakeholders, offers a Chinese solution to the challenge of interoperability in the global smart home sector and has generated numerous positive impacts.

According to news on April 15, 2026, China has made a major breakthrough in the field of smart locks. Guided by relevant departments and led by the association, ISO/IEC14543-5-104: “Information Technology Home Electronic System (HES) Architecture Chapter 5-
Part 104: Information Equipment Resource Sharing Collaboration Service Smart Lock Based on Cloud Management Framework” has become my country’s first leading international standard in the field of smart locks, solving interconnection problems for global smart homes and contributing an open and secure Chinese solution.

In the past, smart homes have been stuck in the dilemma of fragmentation during the process of rapid expansion.
Smart locks of different brands cannot be seamlessly connected to the home platform. In order to adapt the smart locks to the platform, companies have to repeatedly develop interfaces, which not only results in a significant increase in costs but also inefficiency.
For users, the range of product choices is limited and the user experience is greatly reduced.

Faced with these industry pain points, the Beijing Municipal Administration for Market Regulation has given full play to the coordinating role of the standardization authorities and further promoted the implementation of the capital’s standardization strategy.
The Market Supervision Bureau of Haidian District is based on the characteristics of regional industrial development and proactively provides services.
Market supervision departments at the municipal and municipal levels jointly guide industry organizations and market entities to focus on industry needs to carry out standardization efforts.
The Beijing IGRS Information Industry Association took the lead and joined forces with leading enterprises in the industry chain and scientific research institutes to form a special working group to build a multi-party collaborative research and development mechanism of “government, enterprise, research and application”, and to gather the joint efforts of the upstream and downstream of the industry chain to solve common problems.

The special working group participated in the entire review of international standards and conducted multiple rounds of discussions with experts from the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea.
During the discussion process, China’s technical advantages and mature practices were highlighted, while reasonable international suggestions were absorbed to optimize the text, and it was finally passed by the votes of various countries.

The successful formulation of this international standard is of great significance.
First of all, it breaks the interconnection barriers between smart locks and smart homes, allowing smart locks to integrate into smart home systems more smoothly.
Secondly, it reduces the repetitive adaptation work of enterprises and effectively reduces industrial costs.
Furthermore, it brings users a freer and smoother whole-house smart experience. Users can choose smart lock products more freely and enjoy the convenience brought by smart home.
Finally, it paves the way for Chinese smart lock companies to go global and enhances the competitiveness of Chinese smart locks in the international market.

In the future, Beijing will continue to focus on new areas such as smart homes, using the power of standards to promote the transformation of more independent innovation achievements into international standards, empower the high-quality development of the digital economy, and cultivate an open and win-win industrial ecosystem.
