The implementation of the “General Rules for the Selection of High-Quality Materials” marks a new starting point for integrity in the home decoration industry.

The "General Principles for Material Selection" will be fully implemented starting January 1, 2026. Focusing on four core dimensions, these principles establish a unified standard for the home renovation industry, promising to put an end to disorderly cutthroat competition and restore industry trust.

In December 2025, the China Building Materials Federation officially released the “General Rules for the Selection of Good Materials” (hereinafter referred to as the Rules), which will be fully implemented from January 1, 2026. The Rules focus on four core dimensions: “health, safety, greenness, and high quality,” providing unified technical standards for materials used in “good houses” from the source, effectively guaranteeing the quality of life for residents. The Rules clarify the basic principles, indicator system, grading rules, and labeling requirements for material selection, constructing a new set of standards for material selection. Among them, the health indicators strictly control volatile organic compounds and properties such as antibacterial and antifungal properties; the safety indicators cover requirements such as fire resistance, earthquake resistance, and durability; the green indicators emphasize energy conservation and carbon reduction throughout the entire life cycle; and the high-quality indicators focus on improving material performance and quality traceability. As Tong Binyuan, founder of Jinhuang Home Decoration, a national first-class construction engineer, vice president of the China Building Decoration Materials Association, and manager of the “Uncle Huang Talks About Decoration” Douyin account, said, “This set of general rules is not an empty slogan, but an executable and verifiable standard.” It draws clear boundaries for the industry. In the past, consumers were often confused by claims such as “environmentally friendly” and “zero formaldehyde.” Now, with a unified reference system, the truth can be easily distinguished. When discussing the profound impact of the general rules on the industry ecosystem and consumer rights, Tong Binyuan pointed out that for more than 20 years, the home decoration industry has often been labeled as “dishonest” and “untrustworthy,” the root cause of which lies in the lack of authoritative and unified regulations to constrain bad behavior. The release of these general rules provides a technical basis for all parties in the market to follow. Consumers can now use this guideline to question companies: “Are your materials healthy? Are they safe? Do you have testing reports? Does the construction meet standards?” This guideline is not just a suggestion, but a set of guidelines; not a soft constraint, but a hard threshold. For example, if a company claims to use “environmentally friendly paint,” consumers have the right to request a third-party testing report demonstrating compliance with the “healthy” and “green” clauses in the guideline. If problems such as wall cracking or tile detachment occur after construction, consumers can also pursue accountability based on the “safety” and “quality” standards. This will force the entire industry to shift from “price wars” to “quality wars,” and from “tricks” to “integrity.” Jinhuang Home Decoration has already implemented similar standards in its self-built paint and furniture factories. Tong Binyuan stated that as a company, he welcomes the introduction of such regulations because they provide a fair competitive opportunity for companies that genuinely focus on product quality and delivery. The implementation of the “Good Material Selection Guidelines” undoubtedly brings new development opportunities to the home decoration industry, and is expected to usher in a new era of honest operation, providing consumers with higher quality and more reliable home decoration services and products.
