Mining equipment: an all-round display of industrial power

As the core support for modern mining operations, mining machinery encompasses a wide range of equipment. This article provides a systematic overview of the types, operating principles, technical characteristics, and development trends of mining equipment, highlighting its pivotal role in the industry.

Mining machinery is the core support of modern mining production, and its development history reflects the leap in human ability to transform nature.
From giant excavators in open-pit mines to smart drills deep underground, these equipment not only determine mining efficiency, but are also directly related to mine safety and resource utilization.
The following will systematically introduce the main types, working principles and technical characteristics of mining equipment.

1. Mining methods and equipment classification

Mining mining is mainly divided into two basic forms: open-pit mining and underground mining. There are significant differences in equipment selection between the two.
Open-pit mining is suitable for situations where ore bodies are close to the surface. It has the characteristics of high production efficiency, low cost and good safety. Currently, about 90% of global iron ores and about 62% of copper mines adopt open-pit mining.
Underground mining is used for deep ore bodies and requires the construction of complex infrastructure such as shafts and tunnels. The equipment needs to adapt to narrow spaces and complex geological conditions.

Based on the nature of the work, mining machinery and equipment can be divided into four major categories: mining equipment (used for ore mining), transportation equipment (responsible for transporting ore and rock), processing equipment (crushing, grinding, screening) and auxiliary equipment (ventilation, drainage, power supply, etc.).

2. Core equipment of open-pit mines

1. Perforation equipment: drilling rig

Drilling rigs are the primary equipment in the “piercing and blasting” process of open-pit mines. They are used to drill blast holes in the rock mass for charging and blasting.
Modern open pit mines mainly use rotary drilling rigs and down-the-hole drilling rigs.
Rotary drilling rigs cut rocks by rotating the drill bit, and are suitable for rock formations below medium hardness. The drill bit is equipped with a three-cone or spherical tooth structure, and high-pressure air is used to blow out cuttings and cool the drill bit.
Down-the-hole drilling rigs place the impactor at the bottom of the hole, and the impact energy acts directly on the drill bit, avoiding the loss of energy transmission in the drill pipe, and is suitable for deep hole drilling.
Cone drilling rigs in large open pit mines can drill holes with diameters of 250 – 440 mm and depths of more than 20 meters.

2. Mining and loading equipment: excavator

The excavator is the “main force” of the open-pit mine.
Mechanical electric shovels are most commonly used in large-scale open-pit mines due to their powerful digging force and wide adaptability to rock formations; hydraulic excavators are agile and highly precise, and are suitable for small and medium-sized mines or working surfaces that require strict mining accuracy.
The bucket capacity of the world’s largest mining excavator currently exceeds 75 cubic meters, and one shovel can load hundreds of tons of ore rock.

3. Transportation equipment: mining trucks and belt conveyors

The equipment selection in the transportation link directly affects the mine operating costs.
Mining heavy-duty dump trucks (usually with a load capacity of 100-400 tons) are highly flexible and can transport ore directly from the mining site to the crushing station or dumping site, adapting to complex terrain.
The belt conveyor is the core of the continuous mining process. It has the advantages of large transportation capacity, long distance, and low energy consumption. In large open-pit coal mines, the bandwidth of a single conveyor can reach more than 2 meters, and the transportation capacity exceeds 10,000 tons per hour.

4. Earth dumping and auxiliary equipment

Bulldozers are used for site leveling, road construction and dumping operations; graders maintain roads; sprinklers suppress dust.
These auxiliary equipment ensure the continuous and stable operation of the mine production system.

3. Key equipment for underground mines

1.
Underground drilling rigs

Underground drilling rigs are divided into rock drilling rigs and anchor drilling rigs.
Rock drilling rigs are used for tunnel excavation and blast hole construction. They are mostly driven by hydraulics and are equipped with top hammers or down-the-hole impactors. They can operate flexibly in narrow tunnels.
Anchor drilling rigs are used for tunnel support. They install anchor rods after drilling holes in the roof and side walls to prevent the surrounding rock from collapsing. They are key equipment to ensure underground safety.

2. Loader (LHD)

Scraper is the core mining and loading equipment of underground mines, integrating shoveling, transportation and unloading functions.
The special underground loader has the characteristics of low profile, small turning radius, electric or diesel drive (equipped with exhaust gas purification device), etc., so as to adapt to the narrow tunnel space.
Modern remote-controlled and automated loaders can already operate unmanned in hazardous areas.

3. Lifting and transportation system

Underground ore needs to be lifted to the surface through shafts.
The lifting system includes hoists, cages or skips, wire ropes and derricks, etc.
Inclined shaft mining uses belt conveyors or mine car groups.
Ventilation equipment is also critical, and underground mines must establish mechanical ventilation systems to continuously deliver fresh air and remove gun smoke and dust.

4. Mineral processing equipment

The mined raw ore needs to be crushed and ground before it can enter the mineral processing process.

The crusher is used for coarse and medium crushing of ores.
The jaw crusher has a simple structure and reliable operation, and is the first choice for coarse crushing; the cone crusher has a large processing capacity and uniform product particle size, and is suitable for medium and fine crushing of medium-hard ores and above; the impact crusher uses impact to crush the product, and has good particle shape, and is suitable for brittle materials.

The ball mill is the main equipment for fine grinding operations.
Its working principle is: steel balls are installed in the cylinder as grinding media, and the steel balls are thrown down through the rotation of the cylinder, and the ore is ground to the required fineness by impact and grinding.
Ball mills are widely used in metal ore, non-metallic ore and building materials industries. They are the single equipment with the highest energy consumption in mineral processing plants.

5. Technology development trends

Mining equipment is evolving towards large-scale, intelligent and green directions.
Large-scale equipment can significantly reduce unit production costs. For example, the load capacity of electric wheel dump trucks has moved from 100 tons to 400 tons.
In terms of intelligence, self-driving mining trucks, remote-controlled drilling rigs, and intelligent crushing systems have been applied in some advanced mines, significantly reducing the number of on-site workers.
Greening is reflected in the replacement of diesel equipment with electric equipment, low noise and low vibration design, and efficient dust removal systems to reduce the impact of mines on the environment.

Mining equipment is an important part of the heavy industry system, and its technical level directly reflects a country’s equipment manufacturing capabilities.
From rough mechanization to sophisticated intelligence, modern mining equipment is redefining the boundaries of efficiency and safety in mining production.
