Machine tools, known as the “industrial mother machine”, are the cornerstone of a country’s manufacturing industry and the core of high-end manufacturing, aerospace, precision military industry, and chip equipment.
It can be said that the upper limit of accuracy of machine tools is the upper limit of industrial manufacturing in a country.

Today, China’s machine tool industry has long been ranked first in global output value, accounting for 32% of the global market share, far exceeding Germany’s 18% and Japan’s 16%, making it a veritable machine tool power.
But we must face a cruel industry truth: big but not strong, quantity but not quality.
We have achieved full autonomy in mid- to low-end machine tools and are highly cost-effective. However, the field of high-end precision machine tools is still firmly monopolized by German and Japanese companies.
Below, we deeply analyze the real gap between China’s machine tools and the world’s top levels, existing advantages, and prospects for breakthrough in the next ten years, and understand the road to domestic breakthrough for industrial machine tools.
First understand clearly: What is our strength?
Look at the development of the industry objectively and do not belittle yourself. The progress of China’s machine tools is obvious to all.
First, the scale of production capacity is absolutely leading in the world.
The completeness of the domestic machine tool industry chain ranks first in the world. From basic castings, processing equipment to complete machine assembly, a complete industrial cluster has been formed, which can fully meet the needs of domestic general machinery, hardware processing, and general equipment manufacturing. Mid- and low-end machine tools have achieved 100% independent control, completely getting rid of external dependence.
Second, mid-range machine tools will be fully replaced.
In recent years, the iteration speed of domestic machine tools has been greatly accelerated. The stability, accuracy, and life of three-axis and conventional four-axis machining centers have been greatly improved, and the cost performance far exceeds that of imported equipment. In civilian fields such as molds, general parts, and engineering machinery, domestic machine tools have become the mainstream of the market, gradually replacing mid-range equipment from Japan and South Korea.
Third, localization technology breakthroughs are accelerating.
Domestic companies represented by Huazhong CNC, Qinchuan Machine Tool, Shenyang Machine Tool, etc. continue to work hard on core technologies. Core components such as AI intelligent CNC systems, independent spindles, and precision guide rails continue to make breakthroughs. Some high-end equipment has been trialled in small batches, breaking the absolute monopoly of overseas technology.
Facing the gap: the three core shortcomings of top machine tools from Germany and Japan (the key to getting stuck)
Industry experts have clearly pointed out: A high-end CNC machine tool covers 156 subdivided core technologies throughout the entire process, and the overall mastery of domestic leading companies is only 60-70%. It seems that the gap is not big, but in fact, each shortcoming determines the upper limit of high-end manufacturing.
The core gaps focus on three key areas.
First: high-end CNC systems (machine tool brains) are highly dependent on imports.
The CNC system is the core control center of the machine tool, which directly determines the processing accuracy, stability, and linkage efficiency of the equipment.
Currently, in the global high-end market, two companies, Japan’s Fanuc and Germany’s Siemens, account for more than 90% of the market share.
Domestic CNC systems are maturely used in three-axis ordinary machine tools, but in five-axis linkage, ultra-precision machining, and high-speed and high-precision cutting scenarios, there are still significant gaps in stability, algorithm accuracy, and anti-interference capabilities.
The localization rate of high-end systems is less than 10%, and core areas such as aerospace, military precision parts, and high-end chip processing still rely on imported equipment.
Second: Precision core components (machine tool features), the accuracy gap is difficult to smooth out in a short time.
The core competitiveness of high-end machine tools has never been the body shell, but the inconspicuous precision components.
Basic accessories such as high-precision grating ruler, electric spindle, torque motor, precision screw, and guide bearings are the key to determining the micron-level accuracy of machine tools.
German and Japanese companies have been engaged in precision manufacturing for nearly a century, and material technology, grinding technology, assembly technology, and stability adjustment have formed deep technical barriers.
Domestic components commonly have problems such as rapid accuracy attenuation, poor thermal stability, short service life, and insufficient consistency.
To put it simply: the accuracy of new domestic machines meets the standard, but after half a year or one year of continuous operation, the accuracy drifts and the error becomes larger. However, high-end machine tools in Germany and Japan can maintain stable accuracy for ten years. This is the core gap in industrial accumulation.
Third: The overall machine technology and adjustment, as well as the underlying industrial background are insufficient.
Machine tools are not simply assembly of parts, but a comprehensive subject of materials science, mechanics, thermal deformation control, and dynamic adjustment.
German and Japanese machine tool companies have decades of experience in processing data accumulation and process iteration, forming a mature underlying process system.
Domestic machine tools generally have the problem of “emphasis on parameters and neglect of adjustment”. The parameter data on paper meets the standards, but the vibration suppression, thermal deformation compensation, and high-speed dynamic stability in actual processing are far inferior to imported equipment.
The gap is particularly obvious in ultra-precision, ultra-high smoothness, and complex surface processing scenarios.

The real status of the industry: low-end involution, high-end loss
The biggest pain point in the domestic machine tool industry at the moment is structural imbalance.
The mid-to-low-end machine tool market has low barriers to entry and overcapacity. Countless companies have gathered together and engaged in price wars with meager profits. They have no funds to invest in technology research and development, and have fallen into a vicious cycle of “low price, low quality, low quality and low price”.
In the high-end machine tool market, which has the highest profits and highest technical value, more than 70% of the market share is monopolized by German, Japanese and American companies.
Domestic high-end manufacturing companies, in order to ensure product accuracy and stability, have to purchase imported equipment at high prices. The core manufacturing lifeline is still in overseas hands.
Industry Outlook for the Next Ten Years: The gap is narrowing rapidly, and domestic breakthrough is a foregone conclusion
Although there is still a clear gap, there is no need to be pessimistic.
China’s machine tool industry is at a critical turning point from quantitative change to qualitative change. The next ten years will be a golden cycle for domestic high-end machine tools to quickly break through and replace imports.
1. Driven by policy + market, core technology is accelerated.
Industrial machine tools have been listed as a key national research area, and we continue to increase investment in capital, technology, and talent, focusing on breakthroughs in core shortcomings such as five-axis linkage systems, precision functional components, and thermal deformation control.
At the same time, the explosion of domestic high-end manufacturing, new energy, aerospace, and semiconductor industries has forced iterative upgrades of high-end machine tools, and market demand has become the biggest driving force for technological breakthroughs.
2. Localized substitution has leapt from “available” to “easy to use”.
In the past, domestic machine tools were labeled as “usable but unstable.” Nowadays, high-end models from leading companies have achieved significant improvements in accuracy and stability.
Domestic technology, represented by the Huazhong 10 intelligent CNC system, integrates AI algorithms to achieve autonomous perception and independent adjustment. Many of its performances are benchmarked against international mainstream products, and high-end scenarios are gradually being implemented.
Industry predictions indicate that the localization rate of domestic high-end CNC machine tools will continue to rise after 2026, and is expected to increase from the current 55% to more than 70%.
3. The industry reshuffle is over and bid farewell to low-end involution.
As the market standardizes and technical thresholds increase, low-end and inferior production capacity will be gradually eliminated, and industry resources will be concentrated on leading high-quality companies.
In the future, competition in the machine tool industry will no longer be price competition, but technological competition in precision, stability, intelligence, and full life cycle services. The industry will completely bid farewell to extensive development and move toward high-quality upgrades.
The gap in the machine tool industry is the result of a century-old industrial heritage. It cannot be caught up overnight, but it is definitely not a gap that can never be overcome.
We must clearly understand our shortcomings and not be blindly arrogant; we must also strengthen our confidence and not belittle ourselves.
China’s machine tools have completed the “scale catch-up” stage and are sprinting towards “technological catch-up”.
In the next ten years, autonomous and controllable industrial machine tools will be fully implemented. From a machine tool country to a machine tool power, this is the inevitable path for China’s manufacturing industry to break through.
