Cainiao releases self-developed climbing robot, warehousing automation competition escalates

On April 15, Cainiao Group unveiled ZeeBot—its proprietary climbing robot—at the MODEX 2026 international logistics exhibition in Atlanta, USA. The first smart warehouse project utilizing this technology has already been deployed in Dongguan, Guangdong, enhancing storage retrieval efficiency. Cainiao plans to launch the technology in the global market; meanwhile, other industry players have also showcased similar technologies, drawing significant attention to the technical trajectory of climbing robots.

On April 15, at the MODEX 2026 International Logistics Exhibition held in Atlanta, the United States, the largest supply chain industry event in North America, Cainiao Group released its first self-developed climbing robot ZeeBot, and announced that its first intelligent operation warehousing project has been delivered for use in Dongguan, Guangdong.

Climbing robot ZeeBot

Actual measurement data shows that ZeeBot technology has doubled the efficiency of warehouse access, and the robot can climb a five-story shelf in 10 seconds.
This efficient performance undoubtedly brings new vitality to the warehousing and logistics industry.

This MODEX exhibition will be held from April 13th to 16th and is expected to attract more than 1,000 exhibitors and approximately 45,000 professionals.
At the launch site of ZeeBot, Bi Jianghua, vice president of Cainiao Group and general manager of the Logistics Technology Division, said that the automation of all links in the logistics chain still has the problem of disconnection and disconnection, and ZeeBot is designed to open up multiple operation links. It will promote the warehouse from single-point automation to multi-robot intelligent collaboration with AI dispatch.

Climbing robot operation scene

Currently, hundreds of ZeeBots have been put into operation in cross-border logistics warehouses in Dongguan, Guangdong, serving a world-leading cross-border e-commerce platform.
Cainiao plans to gradually put climbing robots into production in overseas warehouses in Europe and the United States, bringing this solution to the global market. This timing coincides with Cainiao’s previously announced global robot warehouse expansion plan.
Just in March this year, Cainiao confirmed that it would deploy large-scale robot warehouse networks in Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany, the United States and other countries and regions.

From an industry perspective, warehousing automation is at a critical stage of technological path differentiation.
Just one day before the opening of MODEX 2026, Geek+, the world’s largest supplier of autonomous mobile robots, announced the launch of the embodied intelligence platform Geek + Brain and the new generation container handling system RoboShuttle V5 in the U.S. market. The company’s new orders in the American market increased by more than 50% year-on-year.
On the same day, Ocado Intelligent Automation also demonstrated the cloud-based AI software system Ocado IQ, which supports the simultaneous operation of two different intelligent picking modes in the same warehouse.
Traditional industrial automation companies such as Honeywell and Comau also displayed their own warehouse automation solutions at the exhibition.

Cainiao chose to debut this new product in the core market of North America, and its intention is very clear.
However, it remains to be seen whether the technical path of climbing robots can truly solve the industry pain points of cross-link connection, or whether it just provides another differentiated solution for warehouse automation.
The full-link multi-robot intelligent collaboration vision mentioned by Bi Jianghua still has a long way to go before realizing cross-brand and cross-system collaborative operations in the current situation where each manufacturer is fighting on its own.
But in any case, this move by Cainiao has undoubtedly injected new competitive vitality into the warehousing automation industry, and also makes us full of expectations for the future development of warehousing and logistics.
