As the core geopolitical hub of the Trans-Caspian “Middle Corridor”, Azerbaijan is taking advantage of the deepening of regional cooperation and the adjustment of global supply chains to accelerate the development of energy resources, infrastructure expansion, Karabakh region reconstruction and port hub upgrades.
Under the superposition of multiple strategic dividends, the country’s demand for imported mining machinery, engineering machinery, construction machinery and special equipment continues to explode. It has emerged as the core growth pole of machinery imports in the Transcaucasus region, opening up a market space with huge potential for global equipment companies.

In terms of green and smart transformation, Azerbaijan has abundant mineral resource reserves, with proven oil reserves exceeding 4 billion tons and natural gas reserves exceeding 400 billion cubic meters. Bauxite, iron ore and other resources rank among the top in the region.
The mining industry market size has grown steadily from US$2.5 billion in 2022, and is expected to exceed US$3.5 billion in 2028, with an average annual growth rate of 8%.
Key development projects such as deep-sea oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea and aluminum mines in the Altai region have directly created demand for imported high-standard mining equipment.
At present, market demand shows a distinct “green + intelligent” transformation characteristic.
In response to global environmental protection initiatives, the Azerbaijani government promotes the mining industry to replace clean energy and reduce emissions, while using automation technology to improve production efficiency and operational safety.
International companies have taken the lead. Anglo Asian Mining has introduced Caterpillar underground mining equipment for its Gilar copper mine project, including three R1700 underground loaders and two 980 UMA wheel loaders. This is the first time Caterpillar underground equipment has landed in the Azerbaijani market. Its remote control, multiple fire extinguishing systems and other intelligent safety configurations accurately adapt to the complex working conditions of underground mining.
The demand for diverse machinery has exploded. In order to consolidate the status of the “Middle Corridor” as an international transportation hub, Azerbaijan has increased investment in transportation and energy infrastructure. Core projects such as railways, highways, and energy channels have been intensively implemented, and the construction machinery market has ushered in explosive growth.
Most of these projects are led by the government or implemented by state-owned enterprises, and can rely on the EU’s 10 billion euros “Middle Corridor” special financing support, with stable funding and strong certainty in equipment procurement needs.
In the railway field, the capacity improvement and reconstruction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the Caspian Sea coastal railway network intensification project are advancing. There is an urgent need for electric locomotives, container flat cars, railway maintenance machinery (tamping machines, cleaning machines) and train control systems. At the same time, there is an increasingly urgent need for supporting technologies such as track inspection and dispatch management.
In terms of highway construction, the east-west highway upgrade and border port road widening projects continue to advance. Compaction machinery, asphalt mixing equipment, and lifting equipment have become rigid needs. The demand for supporting facilities such as intelligent transportation systems and electronic toll collection equipment has also been released simultaneously.

Construction machinery has ushered in a blue ocean of growth. With the signing of the regional peace agreement, the Karabakh region has entered a stage of comprehensive reconstruction. Systematic projects such as residential buildings, public facilities, and energy projects have started one after another, bringing new growth to the construction machinery market.
The terrain in this area is complex and the original infrastructure is severely damaged. There is a particularly prominent demand for small and medium-sized machinery that can adapt to complex working conditions, including small excavators, bulldozers, loaders, concrete mixer trucks, etc.
At present, there are already international brands entering the market through flexible models.
Azinvest, an Azerbaijani construction company, selected two second-hand Potain MC 120B tower cranes for the Karabakh New Health Center project to meet the project construction needs with its stable performance and high cost performance, while relying on the after-sales service of local dealers to ensure the construction progress.
The market growth potential is significant. It is expected that the construction machinery market size in Karabakh will grow from US$3 million in 2024 to US$8 million by 2030, with an average annual compound growth rate of 12%.
There is an urgent need for special machinery. As a key node in the “Middle Corridor”, Azerbaijan is making every effort to promote the modernization and upgrading of Baku Port and Alat Port to build a core freight hub on the Caspian Sea. The import and upgrade of port machinery is particularly urgent.
The upgrade projects of the two major ports not only focus on increasing transport capacity, but also focus on digital and intelligent transformation to adapt to the development needs of multimodal transportation of railways, highways and sea transport.
The third phase expansion project of Baku Port aims to increase the cargo capacity to 25 million tons. There is an urgent need to supplement large-scale quay cranes, yard bridges, container reach stackers, automated guided vehicles and other equipment. At the same time, in order to deal with the channel siltation problem caused by the drop in the Caspian Sea level, Baku Shipyard cooperated with Damen Group to build the first CSD 650 cutter suction dredger. The ship is equipped with 700 kilowatt cutting power and 1825 kilowatt dredging pump. It can be used in 3 –
Operating in a water depth of 18 meters, it will effectively ensure the navigation capacity of the port berth after it is put into operation.
The resonance of demand in the four major fields has made Azerbaijan the “growth highland” of the machinery market in the Transcaucasus region.
As the “Middle Corridor” strategy continues to advance, its demand for various types of machinery will be further released. For international equipment companies with technology, cost or service advantages, now is the golden period to deploy in this emerging market.
