Yancheng’s economy in the first four months of 2026: bright spots and hidden worries coexist

本文对盐城2026年前4个月的经济情况进行了分析,指出经济呈现“稳中有升,隐忧并存”的态势,装备制造和数字经济是亮点,但投资下滑、消费复苏偏慢等问题也较为突出。

Yancheng’s economic performance in the first four months of 2026 can be analyzed from the four dimensions of “stable, rising, worrying, and hidden”. The overall situation shows a trend of “stability, improvement, and hidden worries.”

From the overall tone, the data shows that the fundamentals of Yancheng’s economy are stable, but the two major driving forces of investment and consumption are weak. In particular, investment has declined significantly, and the growth momentum is mainly supported by industry and the service industry.

There are many highlights in terms of sub-item interpretation.
The first highlight is that industrial production is basically stable, supported by equipment manufacturing.
The added value of industrial production above designated size increased by 4.8% year-on-year. This growth rate is in the middle and upper reaches of prefecture-level cities in northern Jiangsu, indicating that industrial production is generally recovering and has not stalled.
Key highlights include industry-specific equipment (+10.8%) and general equipment (+4.9%). The growth rate of the equipment manufacturing industry far exceeds that of the overall industry, indicating that Yancheng’s machinery and equipment manufacturing industry chain is strengthening. This is a signal for the optimization of the industrial structure and an important support for subsequent growth.

The second highlight is the impressive growth rate of the service industry, which is significantly driven by the digital economy and business services.
From January to March, the operating income of the service industry was +14.6% year-on-year. This is the most eye-catching indicator in the current economic data, indicating that the recovery momentum of the service industry is relatively good.
Among the highlights of the subdivided industries, Internet services (+24.5%) and leasing business services (+18.0%) indicate that the digital economy and producer services are growing rapidly and their role in stimulating the economy is increasing. It also reflects that Yancheng’s industrial structure is transforming towards the service industry and new business formats.

However, there are also some hidden worries.
The first concern is that fixed asset investment has fallen sharply and the driving force is insufficient.
The city’s fixed investment from January to April was -6.6% year-on-year, which is currently the biggest shortcoming. The investment growth rate is negative, indicating that Yancheng’s investment driving force is weak.
Industrial investment -1.9%, a slight decrease, reflecting the lack of willingness of manufacturing companies to expand production; service industry investment -15.4%, a large decrease, which is the main drag on the decline in fixed investment and is most likely related to the slowdown in real estate, commercial real estate, and infrastructure investment.
Investment is a leading indicator of economic growth, and a sharp decline may affect the subsequent stability of industry and employment.

The second hidden concern is that the recovery of the consumer market is weak and residents have insufficient confidence.
From January to April, the total retail sales increased by 1.5% year-on-year, and the growth rate was relatively slow, indicating that the overall consumption recovery power was insufficient and residents’ willingness to consume was not strong.
However, communication equipment (+17.3%) and cultural office categories (+8.9%) grew rapidly, indicating that residents still have upgrading needs in digital products and cultural consumption, which is a bright spot in the consumer market.

In terms of other key signals, financial data showed that the deposit balance was +15.0% year-on-year, and the loan balance was +8.5% year-on-year. The growth rate of deposits was significantly higher than that of loans, indicating that residents’ willingness to save is still strong, while their willingness to borrow for consumption and investment is weak, reflecting a lack of confidence in the future economy.
In terms of price index, CPI (consumer price) from January to April was +2.2% year-on-year and +2.5% in April alone, which is moderate inflation and has little impact on residents’ lives; PPI (industrial producer price) was +0.5% year-on-year from January to April, indicating that the overall price of industrial products is rising moderately and there is little pressure on corporate profits.

Generally speaking, Yancheng’s economy in the first four months, industrial and service industries have stabilized the basic market, equipment manufacturing and digital economy are the highlights; however, the sharp decline in investment and the slow recovery of consumption are the main concerns, and the lack of residents’ confidence is the key issue.
The subsequent economic trend will largely depend on whether we can stabilize industry, reverse the decline in investment, and further unleash consumption potential.
The key is to grasp shortcomings, consolidate advantages, and increase confidence.
