The new CIPS cross-border payment pattern is accelerating to take shape, promoting the restructuring of the global financial landscape

On April 21, 2026, WeChat achieved comprehensive, compliant interoperability with payment systems across multiple nations, marking the evolution of cross-border payment systems toward diversified collaboration. As the core of the RMB cross-border payment and clearing system, CIPS is establishing a "golden triangle" for non-USD cross-border payments; through a multi-layered ecosystem strategy, it is driving practical applications and facilitating a profound restructuring of the global financial order.

On April 21, 2026, WeChat officially announced that it has achieved full compliance and interoperability with the five major payment systems: ZeroPay in South Korea, PromptPay in Thailand, DuitNow QR in Malaysia, SGQR+ in Singapore, and LANKAQR in Sri Lanka.
This event is of great significance. It not only means that the regional payment network is accelerating the integration, but also marks that the cross-border payment system is evolving from a single center to a multi-collaboration direction.
Against this background, the new cross-border payment ecosystem with CIPS as its core support is becoming an important force in promoting the restructuring of the global financial landscape.

For a long time, global cross-border payments have been highly dependent on the SWIFT system. While it facilitates international capital flows, it also carries the attributes of a geopolitical tool to a certain extent, causing some countries to face structural risks and uncertainties in the financial system.
In a complex and ever-changing international environment, countries are increasingly demanding a more secure, stable, and controllable payment system, which has become one of the core driving forces for the reform of the cross-border financial system.

The interconnection between WeChat and multinational payment systems is an important manifestation of the autonomy and diversification of regional payment networks.
It not only reduces cross-border payment costs and improves transaction efficiency, but also provides a realistic path for establishing a more independent clearing system in the future.
Under this trend, cross-border payments are no longer an extension of a single channel, but are gradually evolving toward “networking, regionalization, and collaboration.”

In this context, the importance of CIPS has become increasingly prominent.
As the core infrastructure of the RMB cross-border payment and clearing system, CIPS not only undertakes the clearing function, but also plays a key role in promoting the international use of RMB and building a multilateral financial cooperation mechanism.
By continuously expanding participating entities and application scenarios, CIPS is upgrading from a “system tool” to an “ecological platform”.

The CIPS project further proposes a multilateral collaborative framework with “demand-clearance-system” as the core, and builds a non-US dollar-dominated cross-border payment “iron triangle” through cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS countries.
This structure not only responds to the current trend of global financial multipolarity, but also provides more autonomous financial infrastructure for regional and emerging markets.

In this system, some funds undertake the functions of regional resource integration and capital allocation, relying on the basis of economic cooperation between countries to strengthen the efficiency and coordination of capital flows within the region; some funds focus on the growth potential of emerging economies, opening up a wider market space through capital linkage, and providing support for cross-border investment and trade.
As the underlying clearing support, CIPS ensures the safety, stability and compliance of capital flows.

This “trinity” collaboration model is essentially a reconstruction of the traditional cross-border payment structure.
It no longer relies on a single currency or system, but through multilateral participation and institutional coordination to achieve a more resilient financial network.
As relevant experts pointed out, although the internationalization of the RMB may fluctuate in short-term indicators, in the long term, building a multi-currency system has become an irreversible trend, and strengthening infrastructure such as CIPS is one of the key paths.

At the specific implementation level, the CIPS project not only focuses on system construction, but also promotes practical applications through multi-level ecological layout.
Among them, funds form the core sector, and at the same time cooperate with the design of market-oriented mechanisms to form a sustainable development operating system.
For example, through reasonable incentives and rebate mechanisms, individuals and enterprises can be attracted to participate in cross-border transactions, thereby expanding the scale of use and liquidity base.

The project development path is clearly divided into three stages: the first stage is open to all people, encouraging individuals and enterprises to participate in cross-border payments and transactions, rapidly expanding the ecological scale and releasing initial dividends; the second stage connects the cooperation mechanism to achieve higher-level institutional linkage and resource integration; the third stage expands application scenarios to more countries, promotes the internationalization of the system, and forms a diverse and coexisting global payment pattern.

This progressive path not only ensures the stable advancement of the system, but also leaves room for long-term development.
Its core goal is to achieve independence, security and compliance in cross-border payments, while improving the stability and inclusiveness of the global financial system.
As more countries participate, this system is expected to become an important financial infrastructure connecting the region and the world.

From the actual progress of multi-national payment system interoperability to the strategic layout of CIPS linkage, cross-border finance is entering a new stage of development.
This is not only an upgrade of technology and systems, but also a deep reconstruction of the global financial order.
Against the background of the strengthening trend of multi-polarization, a more open, collaborative and stable cross-border payment system is gradually taking shape.
