The battle for trillions of deep-sea minerals: China’s smart mining equipment seizes commercialization opportunities

This article focuses on the deep-sea metal mining equipment industry, outlining its definition, industry chain, and competitive landscape. It analyzes key driving factors and development trends, noting that Chinese enterprises are rapidly catching up in this field and the industry stands on the verge of commercialization.

Globally, a trillion-level battle for deep-sea minerals has quietly begun, and China’s smart mining equipment is making every effort to seize the key nodes of commercialization.

First, let’s clearly define the industry.
“Deep sea” has different definitions in different fields. In the field of deep sea mining equipment, the actual operating water depth is concentrated between 1,500 and 6,500 meters.
Deep-sea metal mining equipment is a special equipment system used for the exploration and collection of strategic mineral resources in deep-sea areas. It includes core subsystems such as seabed ore gathering equipment, vertical lifting and transportation systems, and surface support platforms, as well as broad categories such as exploration and monitoring equipment.
The industry is currently in a critical window period for the transition from scientific research verification to commercial mining, and it is expected to achieve a substantial leap from 2028 to 2030.

The deep-sea metal mining equipment industry chain is divided into three levels.
The upstream is the layer of raw materials and core components, and high-end materials and core electronic devices are highly dependent on external sources; the midstream is the equipment manufacturing and system integration layer, which is the technical core and value center of the industrial chain; the downstream is the mineral mining operation and terminal application layer, covering areas such as mining operations, mineral processing, and terminal applications.
The localization level of upstream core components restricts the industry’s cost reduction and efficiency improvement. The demand of downstream industries such as new energy vehicles brings stable market traction to the equipment industry. At the same time, the integration of new infrastructure scenarios expands the breadth and depth of applications.

The global deep-sea mining equipment industry presents a pattern in which “Europe leads the high-end, while China and the United States accelerate their pursuit”.
European companies occupy the technological commanding heights in the field of underwater autonomous systems and heavy-duty operating robots. Chinese companies, through the traction of major national science and technology projects and the supporting advantages of the entire industry chain, are accelerating to catch up in the field of complete equipment such as mining machines and mining mother ships, forming a “scientific research institute + state-owned enterprise + private enterprise” collaborative research pattern.
The United States promotes commercialization first through unilateral licensing.

There are many core driving factors in the industry.
The demand for security of strategic resources is rigidly driven, the gap between supply and demand of key minerals is widening, and the value of deep-sea mineral resources is highlighted; the turning point of technological maturity has arrived, core equipment has completed engineering verification and sea trials, and commercialization feasibility has been improved; policies continue to be strongly strengthened, injecting institutional impetus into the development of the industry; new scenarios and new demands are fissioning, and application scenarios are constantly expanding; the reverse effect of international competition has accelerated the pace of industry development.

In the future, the deep-sea metal mining equipment industry will show development trends such as intelligence and unmanned, modularization and standardization, the evolution of green and low-disturbance mining technology, the acceleration of vertical integration of the industrial chain, and the reshaping of the international competition landscape.
At the same time, the industry is also facing major barriers such as technology, capital, policies and qualifications.

Chinese companies have made significant progress in this field.
China State Shipbuilding Corporation is the core force of the national team. The mineral pumping system developed by it has completed the ultimate test, and the intelligent deep-sea mining mother ship it designed has overall design capabilities; Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s “Kuo Kao No. 2” has achieved a sea test depth of more than 4,000 meters; Southeast University’s “Zhishan No. 1” has achieved 100% localization of core components and AI integrated exploration and mining collaboration.

In short, the deep-sea metal mining equipment industry has broad prospects. Chinese companies are relying on their own advantages to forge ahead in this trillion-dollar battle for deep-sea minerals and are expected to occupy an important position in the commercialization process.
