6,700 tons, 238%, 10 million yuan – these three figures are not “decoration” in the financial report, but the “record” achieved by Sinopec in the first quarter of this year using TPO waterproof membrane materials.

In other words, others are still adjusting the price. It has made “fireproof + environmental protection + cheap” into a three-in-one “king bomb”, and has pushed imported goods off the table in one go.
Don’t rush to shout “domestic products are on the rise”. Let’s break it down and see how this card is played, and what it has to do with you who are renovating, buying a house, or doing projects.
To think of TPO as a “plastic raincoat” is to underestimate it.
Sinopec secretly added a “longevity factor” – a nano-scale light stabilizer – to the resin, which is equivalent to wearing a pair of permanent sunglasses on the material. No matter how poisonous the ultraviolet rays are, it cannot penetrate them.
After continuous exposure to xenon lamps in the laboratory for 9,000 hours (≈ 30 years outdoors), the tensile strength only dropped by 8%, while ordinary rolls have long since become crispy.
What’s even more cruel is the flame-retardant formula: when exposed to fire, the surface instantly expands into “carbonized armor”, blocking the flames outside without even a drop of kerosene flowing out.
The EU CE and US UL Class A dual certifications were achieved with this layer of armor.
In a word, it upgrades “plastic” into “armor” and makes the armor breathable – 0 chlorine and 0 plasticizer. It can be 100% remanufactured after being dismantled, and even the dismantling costs are saved when the old factory is renovated.

Last year, the owner of a downstream waterproofing factory made a calculation: for the same roof of 10,000 square meters, imported TPO raw materials cost 40,000 yuan, but it only cost 29,000 yuan. What’s more, it has a high melt index and fast plasticization. The temperature of the extruder can be reduced by 20 degrees Celsius, which directly saves 30% of the electricity bill. In addition, it is maintenance-free for 30 years. After calculating the whole life cycle cost, Party A directly decided to “go for it”.
Therefore, in the first quarter of this year, 6,700 tons of materials were sold out as soon as they landed, and the warehouse turnover days were reduced from 15 days to 3 days, which is comparable to the “Double Eleven” express station.
Sinopec took advantage of the trend and stabilized the price at the sweet spot of “25% lower than imports”. It did not allow its peers to engage in price wars, but also allowed itself to maintain a gross profit margin of 30%, a win-win situation.
Many people did not notice that the number “80,000 tons” was hidden in the announcement.
80,000 tons ≈ 40% of the total demand for TPO coils in the country.
Once production reaches full production in 2026, Sino-Korean Petrochemicals will be able to influence market quotations.
What’s even better is that it has locked its base in Wuhan, with a 500-kilometer radius covering the three major waterproof towns in the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and Chengdu and Chongqing. It saves 200 yuan per ton on shipping costs compared to its northern competitors, which is equivalent to giving customers another “red envelope.”
The base has not yet been put into production, but customers have already locked up their positions in advance: China Construction Third Engineering Bureau, Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, Xiongan New Area Sports Center…the list is all “national brands”.
In a word, it uses its production capacity to write the “rules of the game” in advance, and by the time new players come to their senses, the tickets have been sold out.
In the past, domestic materials were often stuck at “95 points in the laboratory and 50 points in the construction site.”
Sinopec simply moved its desk next to the mixing station and built an “application research base” with customers.
During the day, workers are working on construction, and at night, R&D personnel take the cut scraps back to the factory, use infrared spectroscopy to find “scars”, and the formula is iterated the next day.
This is how the 113 technical improvements came about: a mixing head was added to the extruder screw to solve the problem of uneven dispersion of flame retardants; a filter was added to the vacuum port to reduce the crystal point to 0.3‰, and the high-grade product rate was directly increased to 100%.
The most intuitive feelings of customers are: there is no “bulging” of the coiled material on the machine, the temperature window of the weld seam is expanded from ±5°C to ±15°C, the construction in summer is no longer “hot”, the construction period is shortened by one day, and the labor cost is saved by 2%.
New regulations from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development: Starting from 2025, the roof waterproofing design period of government-invested projects will be no less than 20 years.
TPO directly gives 30 years, and also provides 10 more years of insurance. Why not Party A?
For the city, if the roof is replaced with waterproofing once less, there will be less construction waste, and the carbon emission ledger will be immediately reduced; for the owner, not having to pry the roof for 30 years is equivalent to saving the cost of secondary decoration for greening and photovoltaics, turning the roof into a “cash cow”.
Sinopec took advantage of the trend and launched a “rolled material + photovoltaic base” packaging plan. One roll of material has two tracks. Waterproofing money and power generation money are earned together, and the gross profit increases by another 10 points.
In this step, “selling materials” is upgraded to “selling systems.” If competitors want to copy the work, they must first go back and supplement their photovoltaic qualifications, and the threshold is instantly raised.
In the past thirty years, the domestic waterproofing industry has rolled “low price” into the Red Sea; in the next ten years, whoever can form an iron triangle of “longevity + low carbon + low cost” will be able to come ashore.
With a growth rate of 238%, Sinopec told the market that domestically produced materials can not only be used as substitutes, but can also set standards, write rules, and cut cakes.
Next time you pass by a construction site and see the silver-gray “plastic sheet” on the roof, don’t underestimate it – it may be another quietly “capping” of China’s high-end manufacturing.
