Reconstruction of bank ledgers: three-entry accounting leads to a new era of cross-border payments

In June 2026, ICBC Hechi Branch completed a cross-border settlement of 85,000 yuan from submission to payment in seconds, and the handling fee was nearly half lower than the traditional model.
This seemingly inconspicuous business marks the end of an old era: the transition of bank cross-border payments from “daily level” to “second level” is no longer a technical conjecture, but an everyday occurrence.

When a cross-border fund no longer needs to go through multiple agency banks, there is no need to wait 3 –
In 5 working days, we stood at an inflection point – the centralized, multi-intermediary, and post-audited ledger logic that the double-entry accounting era relied on was being replaced by a brand new distributed, real-time verification, and non-tamperable three-entry accounting paradigm.
This means that the underlying structure of the banking system will be fundamentally restructured in the next two decades.

From “two people keeping accounts” to “whole village notarization”, the historical script of account books is repeated.
Since the birth of double-entry accounting in the 15th century, the core logic has never changed: each transaction is recorded in two accounts at the same time, debits and credits are balanced, relying on a centralized entity to maintain the ledger, and relying on post-event audits to verify authenticity.
This system worked well in the industrial era, but it exposed three fatal flaws in the digital era – high trust costs, weak traceability, and obvious efficiency bottlenecks.
Cross-border settlement requires multi-level intermediary processing, and funds are in transit for 3-5 days; paper documents are easy to tamper with, and banks need to spend a lot of energy collecting paper materials to verify each other, often missing transaction opportunities.

The breakthrough of blockchain triple-entry accounting is essentially adding the third dimension of “whole-network witness” to the dual dimensions of “transaction records + status confirmation” of double-entry accounting.
This is not a simple technological upgrade, but a structural leap in the accounting paradigm.
The changes it brings are deeply similar to the logic when double-entry accounting replaced single-entry accounting in the 15th century – double-entry accounting allowed merchants to systematically track the flow of funds and calculate profits and losses for the first time, giving birth to the modern corporate system and banking system; today, through distributed consensus and encryption technology, triple-entry accounting allows multiple entities to jointly maintain an “untamperable account” for the first time without relying on intermediaries, which determines that it will also give birth to a new financial ecology.

The current uplink path of global banks has differentiated into clear differentiated routes, and there are four types of players on the chessboard making moves at the same time.
HSBC is betting on cross-bank collaboration in trade finance; JPMorgan Chase is taking the asset tokenization route; the Chongqing model is taking a different approach, focusing on breakthroughs in land trade rules; and DBS Bank is building a collaborative ecosystem for Southeast Asian trade.
The common direction of the four types of players is that triple-entry accounting is not a single technology upgrade, but the underlying lever for banks to transform from “fund settlement parties” to “ecological connectors”.
Whoever completes the reconstruction of the ledger structure first will control the pricing power of financial services in the next twenty years.

The full implementation of three-entry accounting will not be smooth sailing.
The pace of transformation in the next two decades depends on the game of two core variables: the speed of unification of cross-chain interoperability standards, and the adaptation progress of the regulatory framework.
If cross-chain standards are unified in the industry before 2030, the interconnection of three-type accounting between banks will enter the fast lane; if cross-chain standards fail to be unified, the transformation will be fragmented.
Variables on the regulatory side are also critical. If the central bank introduces special standards for blockchain financial infrastructure before 2028, bank compliance costs will be significantly reduced, and pilot projects can be quickly replicated and promoted; on the contrary, banks will fall into a deadlock of “dare not invest on a large scale and can only pilot on a small scale”, and the transformation cycle will be extended by five to ten years.

Based on the current competitive landscape and technological variables, there are three things that can become clear signposts for testing the transformation process.
First, by 2030, at least half of the world’s top 50 banks will complete the transformation of three-entry accounting for core cross-border payment scenarios; second, between 2028 and 2030, the first industry unified standard for three-entry accounting between banks will appear; third, by 2035, branch density will no longer be the core indicator for measuring bank competitiveness, and “real-time ledger collaboration capabilities” will replace it.
History does not simply repeat itself, but scripts with similar structures often rhyme with the same rhyme.
It took three hundred years for double-entry accounting to become the underlying language of global business infrastructure. The pace of triple-entry accounting is much faster – the time window left for each bank to complete the transformation may only be twenty years.
