Nidaxun Automation Gateway: Breaking through data barriers in the water treatment industry

This article introduces the application of Naidaxun Automation’s Modbus-to-Profinet gateway in the water treatment industry, highlighting its ability to bridge the data gap between new systems and legacy equipment and enable data interoperability. It also showcases the results of a retrofit project at a wastewater treatment plant and outlines the gateway's future evolution from a mere "connector" to an "intelligent edge" device.

If you walk into the central control rooms of many water plants today, you will see a contrasting scene: the data boards on the large smart screens are dazzling, but on the production line, a large number of reliable aerators, dosing pumps, lift pumps and other equipment are still using traditional communication protocols such as Modbus.
There is an invisible “data gap” between the new system and the old equipment, which makes the entire factory always lag behind in the “last mile” of intelligence.

This is a typical integration problem in the field of industrial automation, and the solution often starts with a key player – the industrial protocol gateway.
Among them, Nidaxun Automation’s Modbus to Profinet gateway is becoming an efficient ‘translator’ that connects the old and new worlds and opens up the data bloodline.

If Profinet is the ‘Mandarin’ in the field of modern industrial automation, then Modbus RTU/ASCII is like the ‘dialect’ in various places.
What Nidaxun Gateway does is to achieve millisecond-level, high-fidelity two-way ‘simultaneous interpretation’ between the two.
Its value lies not only in connectivity, but more importantly, in allowing the main control system (such as Siemens S7-1500) to read and write every data of the old Modbus equipment directly and in real time, including current, frequency, status, start and stop commands, etc., just like accessing local Profinet equipment.
This kind of transparent conversion allows the water plant to retain and reuse a large number of underlying assets with long-term service value. Without the need for “big demolition and construction”, the original “information island” can be connected to the unified monitoring and optimization network of the whole plant at a very low cost.

A municipal sewage treatment plant in East China that has been in operation for more than ten years is an excellent case for observing this value.
During the second phase of the factory’s intelligent upgrade, a new advanced control system based on Profinet was built. However, dozens of core equipment (blower, return pump, etc.) in the first phase of the project only support Modbus RTU communication.
The transformation faces the challenge of having to carry out production without stopping production and without affecting water quality standards.

Nidasun’s solution is to deploy several gateways in key process sections.
The Profinet end of the gateway is connected to the new network, and the RS-485 end is connected in parallel to the original equipment bus to form a ‘bridge’.
Field engineers reported that the most time-consuming task was checking the uneven Modbus address tables of old equipment.
But once the address is confirmed, use Nidaxun’s graphical configuration tool to perform ‘point-to-point’ data mapping, and the process is intuitive and clear.
During the entire wiring and debugging period, the original production line continued to operate stably, achieving truly ‘inductive’ access.

After the system was put into operation, the central control room realized unified monitoring and data analysis of the entire plant’s equipment for the first time.
Automatically adjusts aeration volume based on real-time dissolved oxygen data, reducing overall energy consumption by approximately 8%.
The dosing system achieves precise closed-loop control, saving over one million yuan in pharmaceutical costs annually.
The project unleashes the digital potential of existing assets with an investment of less than 20% of the overall replacement plan.

At present, the connection technology represented by Nidaxun Automation Modbus to Profinet Gateway has successfully solved the basic problem of ‘whether data can be interoperable’.
Looking to the future, its role will undergo a profound evolution from a passive ‘protocol converter’ to an active ‘intelligent edge node’.
Future gateways will have built-in stronger edge computing capabilities. It will no longer just transmit raw data, but can perform real-time analysis and preprocessing of water quality parameters, equipment vibration, and energy consumption curves at the edge of the network, and directly transmit valuable feature information or alarm events to the upper system, greatly reducing the load on the central system.
Its ultimate significance is to allow every existing investment to continue to participate in value creation.
What it paves is an advancement path from ‘device connection’ to ‘data insights’ to ‘business intelligence’.
This is not only an upgrade of technology, but also an innovation of operational concepts, pushing the water industry to move steadily from traditional operations that rely on experience to precise management and smart decision-making based on data.
