Multilateral Central Bank Digital Currency Bridge: Reshaping the New Pattern of Global Cross-Border Payments

The multilateral central bank digital currency bridge represents a revolutionary breakthrough in cross-border payments; spanning from technical architecture to commercial application, it is profoundly reshaping the trajectory of global capital flows and offering a "Chinese solution" for building a new, open, and inclusive financial ecosystem.

A cross-border payment has gone from taking days in the past to just the blink of an eye now. Multilateral central bank digital currency bridges are quietly reshaping the trajectory of global capital flows.
In traditional cross-border payments, companies often face the troubles of layers of transfers and overlapping fees, and it takes 2 to 5 days for funds to arrive.
This traditional agency banking model is not only inefficient, but also suffers from low capital turnover efficiency for small, medium and micro enterprises.

At the end of 2025, this pain point will usher in a revolutionary breakthrough.
The distributed architecture built by the Multilateral Central Bank Digital Currency Bridge through blockchain technology has greatly shortened the payment link. It only takes 6 to 9 seconds to process a cross-border transaction, which is more than a thousand times more efficient than the traditional model.

The rise of currency bridges: from concept to commercial implementation

The multilateral central bank digital currency bridge is not an overnight success.
In February 2021, under the guidance of the Hong Kong Innovation Center of the Bank for International Settlements, the Digital Currency Research Institute of the People’s Bank of China jointly launched this project with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Bank of Thailand, and the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates.
After more than three years of development, the project entered the minimum viable product stage in June 2024, marking the official transition of this new cross-border payment infrastructure from testing to commercial application.
In November 2025, Pan Gongsheng, Governor of the Central Bank of China, attended the launch ceremony of the China-UAE payment cooperation project in the UAE and witnessed the official launch of the UAE multilateral digital currency bridge project.
This move shows that the multilateral central bank digital currency bridge model is gaining recognition from more and more monetary authorities.

Technical architecture: Blockchain reshapes the payment ecosystem

The core innovation of Currency Bridge lies in its blockchain architecture based on distributed ledger technology.
Each participating central bank operates independent nodes but can achieve real-time interconnection. It not only ensures the integrity of each country’s monetary sovereignty through technical isolation, but also solves the problem of multi-party mutual trust with the help of the consensus mechanism.
This design achieves three major breakthrough advantages: “Second-level arrival” improves capital turnover efficiency, “No intermediary bank fees in the entire process” reduces transaction costs, and “Traceable circulation trajectories” strengthens risk management and control.
Compared with the traditional SWIFT remittance model, Currency Bridge enables point-to-point direct transactions between banks on the bridge without the need for agent bank transfer, thereby creating a faster, lower-cost, and safer new cross-border payment path.

Commercial application: from large central enterprises to small and medium-sized enterprises

The application value of currency bridge has moved from theory to reality.
In September 2025, data disclosed by a domestic central enterprise showed that the cumulative transaction volume of cross-border settlement business completed through the multilateral central bank digital currency bridge has exceeded 10 billion yuan.
The financial director of a multinational group in Quanzhou has a deep understanding of this: “In the past, cross-border fund transfer was like sending a letter, but now it is like sending a message.” The group’s cross-border two-way RMB capital pool business handled through Currency Bridge has achieved a leap from “settlement on a daily basis” to “receipt in minutes”.
Not only do large businesses benefit, Currency Bridge also opens up new avenues for small and medium-sized enterprises.
A travel agency in Ningde used the Currency Bridge online banking application channel to submit online and apply with one click, and the accounts can be quickly transferred directly to overseas partners.
The person in charge of corporate finance said: “The speed of cross-border settlement is several times faster than before.”

Future Outlook: Building a new open and inclusive financial ecosystem

The value of Currency Bridge goes beyond simple technological innovation.
Its modular design allows different jurisdictions to flexibly adapt their own regulatory rules, and the equal governance structure allows all participants to have equal say.
This kind of inclusiveness that “does not target a specific central bank and is open to the world” breaks geoeconomic barriers.
In the future, as the digital renminbi becomes interconnected with the digital currencies of central banks of more economies through the multilateral central bank digital currency bridge, it will surely further break the time and space barriers and geographical barriers of cross-border payments.
Lu Lei, deputy governor of the People’s Bank of China, said that the People’s Bank of China will connect the payment systems and legal digital currency systems of various economies based on central bank contracts, equal governance and blockchain architecture to achieve second-level direct cross-border payments in multiple currencies and provide Chinese solutions for central bank digital currency cross-border payment cooperation.
In January this year, Bank of Communications Zhangjiajie Branch successfully implemented three cross-border remittances under the Multilateral Central Bank Digital Currency Bridge, with the maximum single amount reaching 27 million yuan, marking a more mature application and promotion of this business.
As more businesses and financial institutions join, Currency Bridge is expected to become a new international cross-border payment infrastructure.
The global cross-border payment market is facing an unprecedented window of change.
The promotion of the multilateral central bank digital currency bridge not only means a breakthrough at the technical level, but also reflects the deepening of international financial cooperation, providing Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions for building an open, inclusive, and efficient global financial infrastructure.
