Michelin Shanghai “Future Factory” goes into operation, leading the transformation of the global tire industry

On January 23, 2026, the "Magnolia Project"—Phase II of the renovation and expansion of Michelin's Shanghai plant—officially commenced production, marking the first implementation of Michelin's "Factory of the Future" strategy in China; the plant boasts four core features that will drive the development of China's mobility industry.

On January 23, 2026, the second phase of the Michelin Shanghai factory reconstruction and expansion project – the “Magnolia Project” was officially put into operation in the Minhang Development Zone.
With the first high-performance green tire Michelin Racing 5E successfully rolling off the assembly line, this “Future Factory” with a total investment of 3 billion yuan has set sail, marking the first time that the “Future Factory” strategy promoted by Michelin Group on a global scale has taken root in China.

As a major foreign-funded project in Shanghai and Minhang District, the “Magnolia Project” is Michelin’s first strategic-level project that is designed, constructed and operated in full compliance with the “Future Factory” concept.
The project focuses on the rapid growth of China’s new energy and high-end travel markets, and is committed to building a new industry paradigm that integrates advanced manufacturing and sustainable concepts.
Michelin’s “Future Factory” goes beyond simple capacity expansion. It is a system reconstruction for the future – from products to delivery, from energy to data, from manufacturing to ecology.
In the vibrant land of Shanghai, Michelin is transforming its vision of “everything is sustainable” into touchable high-end products, perceptible consumption experiences, and replicable green paradigms.

At the press conference, we learned that this “future factory” has four core features.
First, focus on high-end and lead market trends.
The project focuses on 18- to 24-inch high-performance, large-size tires. About 70% of the production capacity is used for new energy models, accurately responding to the wave of electrification, intelligence and high-endization of China’s automobile industry.
After being put into operation, the factory’s annual production capacity will be increased to 9.5 million units, and its product catalog will exceed 360 types, further consolidating Michelin’s leading position in the high-end travel market.

Second, it is super flexible and responds to the changing market.
Through the world’s leading ultra-flexible production model, a single molding machine can roll off one tire every 36 seconds, supporting the production of a minimum order of 100 pieces.
The order delivery cycle has been shortened from 10 days to 5 days, deeply empowering the automotive industry chain with “small batches, quick response”, and helping vehicle companies achieve supply chain upgrades with light inventory and high matching.

Third, green manufacturing and implementation of sustainable commitments.
The factory adopts 100% electrified production and introduces a high-efficiency electric vulcanization process, which improves energy efficiency by more than 400% compared with traditional steam vulcanization.
All use clean and renewable electricity to achieve carbon neutral production and operations.
A total of more than 30 million yuan has been invested in environmental protection facilities to achieve 100% water circulation and efficient waste recycling, setting a new benchmark for green industry.

Fourth, intelligent operation, AI-driven optimization of the entire chain.
Comprehensively integrate AI design, intelligent production management and AI-assisted quality inspection systems to promote the transformation of the manufacturing model from “post-event response” to “pre-judgment beforehand”.
The data-driven management system can significantly improve production efficiency and quality stability, reduce trial and error costs, and build a truly smart industrial ecosystem.

It is no accident that Michelin’s “Future Factory” strategic choice took the lead in blooming in China.
China is not only the world’s largest automobile market, but also one of the countries with the fastest popularization of new energy vehicles, the most significant demand for consumption upgrades, and the most complete digital infrastructure.
As Ye Fei, President of Michelin Greater China, said, this project is a reflection of Michelin’s long-term commitment to “deeply cultivate China and promote high-quality development and green transformation.”
There is not only the local government’s high level of support for high-end manufacturing and sustainable foreign investment projects, but also the strategic opportunities brought by the rapid transformation of China’s automobile industry towards electrification and intelligence.

Michelin uses the “Magnolia Project” as a fulcrum to inject the world’s leading technology, flexible production and green concepts into China’s intelligent manufacturing system. It not only responds to the “double carbon” goal and the “new quality productivity” development direction, but also demonstrates its determination to use the Chinese market as an innovation engine to participate in and lead global industry changes.
In the future, this factory will continue to release new productivity that synergizes “people, profits, and the environment”, resonate with the Chinese market, and drive the travel industry in a safer, more comfortable, and more sustainable direction.
The story of Michelin and China has once again proved that only by taking root in the most dynamic soil can the future bloom early and bear fruit slowly.
