Liebherr mining equipment boasts a rich history. Founded in 1949 by Hans Liebherr, the company designed and developed the L 300 excavator as early as 1954. In 1961, Liebherr chose Colmar in the Alsace region of France as its production base for tracked excavators. In 2011, Liebherr Mining Equipment Colmar GmbH was established, making Colmar, France, Liebherr’s global manufacturing base for mining excavators.

At MINExpo 2008, Liebherr launched its largest model, the 800-ton R 9800 mining excavator. This product remains one of Liebherr’s flagship products, showcasing its technological strength in the field of ultra-large mining equipment. Regarding bulldozers, Liebherr launched its first tracked bulldozer prototype in 1972, and established a tracked bulldozer production base in Terfs, Austria in 1976; in 1978, it launched its first hydrostatic transmission tracked bulldozer.
</ … In its mining truck product line, Liebherr acquired a US mining truck manufacturer in 1995, adding mining trucks to its mining equipment portfolio and achieving a complete product line of mining equipment from excavation and loading to bulldozing and transportation. To date, Liebherr mining equipment has achieved independent development of key components such as engines, hydraulic cylinders, and slewing bearings, enabling it to provide customers with industry-leading performance and the lowest cost per ton. At the same time, Liebherr is committed to promoting sustainable development and green transformation in the mining industry by providing low-emission and zero-emission solutions, working with global customers. In 2024, Liebherr's mining equipment sales reached a record €1.669 billion, a year-on-year increase of 14.7%; with the Asian and Oceanian markets contributing 75.9% of sales. Based on strong global demand for mining equipment, a good order book, and numerous zero-emission and autonomous driving technology projects, Liebherr expects its mining equipment business to continue the growth momentum of 2024 in 2025. In 2025, Liebherr Mining Equipment seized opportunities in the global mining equipment market, making full-fledged efforts and achieving continuous breakthroughs in the global market, securing several record-breaking orders. In Australia, Liebherr has engaged in extensive collaborations with numerous companies. The partnership with Fords River began in June 2022, with both parties jointly developing zero-emission transportation solutions and autonomous driving systems (AHS). Since the collaboration began, Liebherr has delivered multiple 400-ton R 9400 E electric-drive mining hydraulic excavators to Fords River and successfully completed the "oil-to-electric" conversion of a 400-ton diesel-powered mining excavator. Liebherr's 240-ton T 264 hydrogen-powered mining truck (also known as Europa) is currently undergoing testing at the Fords River Christmas Creek mining site. During MINExpo 2024, Liebherr secured its largest order ever, signing a contract with Fortescue for a total of 475 zero-emission mining machines, valued at $2.8 billion. Large-scale deliveries will begin in 2025, with completion expected by 2030. Furthermore, Liebherr has a partnership with BHP Billiton for over 20 years, delivering one 400-ton R 9400 E electric-drive hydraulic mining excavator to BHP Billiton's Yandi mine in Pilbara, Australia in 2024. Liebherr also signed a bulk purchase agreement with Glencore for mining equipment, with seven units already delivered and the remaining 10 units scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026. Multiple mining machines have also been delivered to companies such as Polaris Resources, Roy Hill, Yancoal, Stanmore Resources, Mineco, and Western Plant Hire.

Liebherr has also achieved remarkable results in other regions internationally. In September 2025, two 70-ton PR 776 mining bulldozers were delivered to the Bengalon coal mine project in East Kalimantan, Indonesia; in April, four 70-ton PR 776 mining bulldozers were delivered to the Gibraltar copper mine under Taseko Minerals in Canada; in 2025, the Brazilian J. Mendes Group introduced three 150-ton R 9150 mining excavators; in August, one 50-ton PR 766 mining bulldozer was delivered to Cementos Argos in Colombia; in July, a complete overhead power supply system was delivered to Collahuasi Mining Company in Chile; multiple overhead power supply mining trucks were also provided in Panama, Zambia, Austria, and other locations; two 350-ton R 9350 mining excavators were delivered to Kascco in Zambia; and one 150-ton R 9150 mining excavator was delivered to Gaia Technical in Greece.
