At a press conference on May 26, 2026, Chen Guoqing, executive vice president of the China Building Materials Federation, said that between 2025 and 2027, the building materials industry will complete the development of 424 key national standards.
At present, relevant work is progressing quite smoothly, and more than 120 national standards have been completed and issued, which effectively supports the optimization and upgrading of the traditional building materials industry.
As an important basic raw material and product industry for the development of my country’s national economy, the building materials industry covers three categories: building materials, non-metallic minerals and products, and new inorganic non-metallic materials.
There are more than 250,000 building materials companies, with a total annual output value of 7 trillion yuan.
Moreover, the building materials industry has established a relatively complete national standard system, involving 37 current mandatory national standards and 1,207 recommended national standards.

The national level has successively proposed appropriate advanced investment in new infrastructure, implementation of housing quality improvement projects, as well as policy directions such as urban renewal, “good house” construction and new rural development, which have brought huge demand to the building materials industry.
The building materials industry proactively responded to changes in the situation, gave full play to the leading role of national standards in the transformation and upgrading of the industry, and carried out standard upgrading work focusing on the following three aspects.
First, in terms of quality improvement.
“Unable to understand and choose unclearly” building materials products has always been a headache for consumers.
To this end, the organization developed a quality grading standard for ceramic tiles, which for the first time divided the quality of building materials products into three levels from high to low: 5A, 4A, and 3A, making it easier for consumers to choose materials based on their basis.
At the same time, the national standard “General Requirements for Building Materials Product Traceability Systems” was developed and released, which provides a technical basis for solving problems such as difficulty in traceability, recall, and supervision of building materials products. It has been piloted and applied in cement, building insulation materials and other fields.
The second is to ensure safety.
In response to issues such as the volatilization of toxic and harmful substances after decoration, which are widely concerned by consumers, we have promoted the development of national standards such as methods for measuring the release of volatile organic compounds in decorative materials, and testing methods for the formaldehyde removal performance of photocatalytic materials and products, which provide an effective methodological basis for scientifically evaluating product pollutant indicators, improving indoor air quality, and ensuring consumers’ personal health and safety.

The third is in terms of supply of high-quality products.
National standards for the evaluation of green products such as waterproofing and sealing materials have been developed to promote the promotion and application of green building materials products and achieve new results.
By the end of 2025, the revenue of green building materials products will exceed 250 billion yuan, with an average annual growth rate of 20% in the past five years.
In addition, in terms of serving the construction of national key projects, the formulation and implementation of the national standard for “Ferroaluminate Cement” has filled the gap in standards for this type of cement products in my country and strongly supported the construction of nuclear power and marine projects; the timely revision of the standards for medium- and low-heat Portland cement has met the needs of large-scale water conservancy construction projects such as the hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra River.
Through the development and implementation of these standards, the building materials industry not only meets the current market needs, but also lays a solid foundation for the long-term development of the industry. In the future, it is expected to show stronger competitiveness in the international market and promote more high-quality Chinese building materials products to the world.
