How to select the air delivery and pressure for an air compressor?

How to select air compressor displacement and pressure

Air compressor displacement and pressure are determined in two steps: ① Displacement (m³/min) = Total air consumption of all equipment × Simultaneous usage factor (0.6–0.85) × Leakage rate factor (1.15–1.2) × 1.2 safety margin; the rated displacement should be 1.2–1.5 times the total air consumption. ② Pressure (bar) = Maximum pressure required at the point of use + Pipe network pressure loss (0.1–0.2 MPa); do not select a pressure higher than necessary (every 1 bar increase consumes 7% more electricity)—base your selection on air output, not power (kW).

I.
How to calculate displacement (Key step)

Steps: List all pneumatic equipment → Check the rated air consumption for each unit (m³/min) → Sum the values → Multiply by the simultaneous usage factor (0.6–0.85, as not all equipment runs at full load simultaneously) → Multiply by the leakage rate factor (15–20%) → Multiply by the 1.2 safety margin; Example: 5 units at 0.5 m³/min each × 0.8 × 1.18 ≈ 2.4 m³/min (select a model with 2.4–2.7 m³/min capacity); Reference: A single machining center consumes 0.3–1.2 m³/min, while a spray gun consumes approx. 170 L/min—compile the data first, then calculate (do not simply choose a larger unit based on intuition).

II. Determining Pressure

Rule: Select based on the highest operating pressure required by end-use equipment plus 0.1–0.2 MPa for pipeline pressure loss; Typical ranges: 90–125 psi (approx. 6.2–8.6 bar) for industrial pneumatic tools, up to 175 psi (approx. 12 bar) for sandblasting; Avoid excessive pressure: Electricity consumption increases by about 7% for every 1 bar of added pressure (higher pressure means higher costs); Checks: Measure pressure at the point of use (long pipelines cause significant pressure drop)—sufficient pressure is enough (excessive pressure = wasted electricity costs).

III.
Variable Frequency vs. Fixed Speed

Fixed Speed: For stable, 24-hour full-load air demand (cost-effective and reliable); Variable Frequency (VFD): Choose for fluctuating air demand (saves 20–35% electricity by adjusting speed based on load); Multiple Units: A combination of VFD and fixed-speed units is recommended (large fixed-speed unit for base load, smaller VFD unit for peak regulation); No-load Operation: Avoid oversizing to prevent high no-load electricity costs—choose fixed speed for stable demand and VFD for fluctuating demand (electricity savings can recoup the investment within a few years).

IV.
Don’t Forget Ancillary Equipment

Dryer: Refrigerated or desiccant dryers are required for food, pharmaceutical, or electronics applications (moisture and oil damage pneumatic systems); Air Receiver Tank: Stabilizes pressure and acts as a buffer (0.5–2 m³ capacity depending on air consumption); Filters: Main line plus precision filtration (grades air source quality); Piping: Calculate main pipe diameter based on flow rate (keep pressure drop below 0.1 bar/100 m)—the “trio” of generation, drying, and filtration is essential (air quality determines equipment lifespan).

V. Selection Steps

First, list the equipment (all pneumatic equipment + rated air consumption); second, calculate the required air delivery (sum × simultaneity factor × leakage factor × 1.2); third, determine the pressure (maximum operating pressure + 0.1–0.2 MPa for pressure loss); fourth, choose between VFD and fixed-speed (based on load characteristics);
fifth, configure downstream treatment (drying + filtration + air receiver tank)—Air compressor selection summary: calculate air volume first → determine pressure → select drive type → configure downstream treatment (select the unit based on air output; do not purchase a higher pressure rating than necessary).
