Great changes in foreign trade: Cross-border e-commerce joins hands with industrial belts to start a new journey for brands to go overseas

The Standing Committee of the State Council has made the final decision, pressing the “accelerator button” for foreign trade growth!
Cross-border e-commerce and overseas warehouses are becoming the key forces to break the situation.

In the face of global trade turmoil, the “ballast stone” of China’s foreign trade is being reshaped by new business formats.
The State Council executive meeting recently made clear arrangements to strengthen new drivers of foreign trade, promote the development of cross-border e-commerce, and promote the construction of overseas smart logistics platforms.
This is by no means a simple policy reaffirmation, but a strategic transition from “selling to the world” to “chaining the world.”

Data is the most powerful statement.
In 2024, my country’s cross-border e-commerce import and export volume will reach 2.63 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10.8%, accounting for 6% of foreign trade.
In the past five years, its scale has grown more than 10 times, and its growth rate far exceeds traditional foreign trade.
Under the impact of the epidemic, it has stabilized its foreign trade fundamentals by relying on its advantages such as online transactions, non-contact delivery, and short transaction chains.
Today, it has grown from a “supplementary force” to an “important force” and “new driving force.”

The resonance between policy and market is giving rise to a profound logistics revolution.
Overseas warehouses, once regarded as “supporting facilities”, are being upgraded to “strategic fulcrums” for the high-quality development of foreign trade.
The meeting encouraged traditional foreign trade companies, cross-border e-commerce and logistics companies to participate in the construction of overseas warehouses, aiming to improve their digitalization and intelligence levels and promote small, medium and micro enterprises to “borrow ships to go overseas.”
As of 2023, my country has more than 2,500 overseas warehouses, but the overall “small and scattered” status needs to be changed urgently.
Promoting the construction of overseas smart logistics platforms is precisely to integrate resources and connect these overseas warehouses from isolated points into a global, efficient and collaborative network to solve the “last mile” problem of cross-border e-commerce.

The deeper logic is that the value of Chinese manufacturing is being revalued.
The overseas warehouse model localizes delivery, returns, exchanges and other services, greatly improving user experience and delivery timeliness.
More importantly, it drives independent brands to “go global”, expand international markets, and improve the level of the value chain.
The National Standing Committee encourages the “cross-border e-commerce + industrial belt” model, which is precisely to promote factories in numerous industrial belts to move from OEM production to building their own brands, and from exporting products overseas to exporting brands overseas.
This is not only an expansion of sales channels, but also a profound transformation of China’s supply chain from cost advantage to brand advantage and ecological advantage.

Of course, the journey is not an easy one.
Industry competition is intensifying, overseas compliance reviews and data security challenges coexist.
Logistics costs, cross-border payments, and after-sales services are still pain points.
In this regard, the policy “combination” has been targeted: expanding the coverage of export credit insurance, optimizing cross-border trade settlement to help enterprises improve exchange rate risk management, formulating guidelines for intellectual property protection, and simplifying the cross-border e-commerce export supervision process.
These measures are aimed at reducing corporate institutional costs and building a solid bottom line for compliance operations.

Looking to the future, the main battlefield for cross-border e-commerce competition will shift from traffic to supply chain collaboration and brand in-depth operations.
Policy dividends are shifting from “extensive support” to “precision empowerment”, and future overseas warehouse assessments may pay more attention to utilization rates and digitalization levels.
For enterprises, only by closely following policy guidance, deeply cultivating the supply chain, and adhering to brand and compliance can they survive the waves.

This transformation planned by the Standing Committee of the State Council is not only related to the growth of foreign trade figures, but also the improvement of China’s economic voice in the global industrial chain.
When “Made in China” and “Chinese Brands” are more closely connected to the world through cross-border e-commerce and the intelligent network of overseas warehouses, the resilience of China’s foreign trade will become more solid, and new momentum for development will continue to surge.
