Dalian’s foreign trade export growth in the first five months: driving a positive economic cycle

2026年前5个月,大连出口同比增长15.5%,增速跑赢全国。本文从宏观经济、产业内部、开放枢纽三个维度,剖析出口增长对大连经济的影响,揭示其背后的系统性正向循环。

On June 17, 2026, Dalian Customs announced a set of weighty data: in the first five months, Dalian’s exports were 112.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 15.5%, and the growth rate outperformed the country.
This number quickly became a focus of observation of the Northeast economy.
Exports surged by 15.5%. What exactly did it bring to Dalian?
Breaking it down from three different dimensions, the answer will be clearer.

Dimension 1: Macroeconomic “boost”

From a macroeconomic perspective, high export growth has been directly reflected in Dalian’s core economic indicators.
Dalian’s GDP in the first quarter reached 238.27 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.4%, and the growth rate led the three northeastern provinces.
Behind this number, one of the biggest contributors is exports.
Compared with the pattern of previous years, Dalian’s annual exports will grow by 10.6% in 2025, driving GDP to exceed the trillion mark, and the added value of industrial production above designated size will increase by 11.7% that year. The two show a strong positive correlation.
Export growth surged to 15.5% in the first five months of 2026, directly driving the GDP growth rate in the first quarter (5.4%) to be significantly higher than that for the whole of 2025 (about 3.5%). It also drove the above-scale industrial added value from January to April to increase by 9.9% year-on-year, and industrial profits increased by 36.6%.
Simply put, for every percentage point increase in exports, Dalian’s economic engine will roar one more point.
In this round of growth, quality is particularly prominent – mechanical and electrical products account for more than 60%, and ship exports have doubled. This is a real dividend brought by high value-added products in the global market.

Dimension 2: “Chain reaction” within the industry

Switch the perspective to the front line of the industry, and you will find that the growth of orders does not stay on the books, but actually changes the industrial chain.
The shipbuilding industry directly “exploded orders”: Dalian’s ship exports increased by 120.1% year-on-year.
Shipyard orders from leading companies have been scheduled until 2029. The order volume of 26 supporting companies has increased by more than 60% year-on-year, and some factories are operating at full capacity.
The overall “quality” of processing trade: the import and export of processing trade increased by 39%, driving the capacity utilization rate of the entire industrial chain to jump from 72% to over 90%.
The speed of “nearby supporting” in automobile and other industries: The localized supporting rate of Chery’s Dalian base has soared from 2% to 40%, and is moving towards the goal of a 5-kilometer supporting circle, driving the common growth of a whole group of small and medium-sized parts companies.
What goes on the ship, what is installed in the car, and what is used in the workshop are no longer just “made in Dalian”, but “the whole chain is made in Dalian”.
The increase in the proportion of processing trade means that Dalian is upgrading from a simple cargo export port to a high-end manufacturing base with “front port and back factory”.

Dimension 3: The “new label” of the open hub

Let’s look at the significance of the Northeast at a more macro level.
Dalian’s export explosion is not an isolated effort, but a gateway effect as the core of Northeast China’s opening up.
The total foreign trade scale of the three northeastern provinces is 539.04 billion yuan, of which Dalian alone accounts for about 40%.
The radiation effect of export growth is being transmitted inland.
In 2026, Dalian will open 16 new foreign trade container routes, bringing the total number of routes to 108. More than 300 ports around the world, including all RCEP core ports, will greatly improve the efficiency of shipping goods in the hinterland of Northeast China.
The import and export volume to ASEAN, Africa and other emerging markets increased by 66.8% and 190.9% respectively, proving that Dalian’s market territory is rapidly expanding.
Mainstream financial media commented that this is a typical example of “blue kinetic energy empowering the revitalization of Northeast China.”
Dalian Port is responsible for more than 98% of the foreign trade container transshipment in the Northeast. Its growth has given enterprises in the Northeast’s inland a fast lane to reach the global market.

Comprehensive judgment: The export engine is driving a “positive cycle”

Putting the three dimensions together, the conclusion is clear: Dalian’s 15.5% export growth is not a short-term market fluctuation, but a systematic positive cycle from macroeconomics, industrial core to regional positioning.
The global competitiveness of high-end manufacturing has opened up the ceiling for export growth; the abundant orders brought by export growth have fed back the upgrade of the local industrial chain and the confidence to attract investment; the improvement of the industrial chain and the hub efficiency of the port have further strengthened Dalian’s irreplaceability as the core of Northeast China’s opening up.
Of course, the structural hidden dangers of “one dominant industry” in petrochemicals and the radiation efficiency of the hinterland economy still need to be improved – but in this structural transformation of “radiating outwards and empowering inwards”, Dalian has found a new way to get rid of dependence on traditional paths and transform itself from “a port in the Northeast” to a “node in the world”.
This is probably the most noteworthy signal behind this foreign trade data.
