China and the EU launch a new consultation mechanism, bringing significant benefits to China’s foreign trade

On May 30, China's Ministry of Commerce officially announced that China and the EU are discussing the establishment of a regular consultation mechanism for trade and investment. This marks a shift in China-EU economic and trade relations from "frequent friction" to "rational management," bringing significant benefits to China's foreign trade and employment.

On May 30, China’s Ministry of Commerce officially announced: China and the EU are exploring the establishment of a normalized trade and investment consultation mechanism, fully opening up dialogue channels, giving priority to resolving differences through consultation, and avoiding escalation of friction.
This news follows the EU’s closed-door policy discussion on China on May 29, marking the shift in China-EU economic and trade relations from “frequent frictions” to “rational management and control” and providing “reassurance” for China’s foreign trade.

China-EU economic and trade frictions have continued in recent years.
Tariff barriers are high in areas such as electric vehicles, photovoltaics, and steel; unilateral trade instruments are frequently used, and uncertainty in corporate exports has soared; the EU’s “de-risking” argument has caused many concerns about cross-border investment.
However, China and the EU are each other’s second largest trading partners, with bilateral trade volume exceeding US$800 billion in 2025. “Decoupling and breaking links” will be a heavy blow to both sides.
The essence of establishing a consultation mechanism is to replace confrontation with dialogue and stabilize expectations with rules.

This consultation mechanism has three core benefits, which directly benefit foreign trade companies and workers.
First, friction creates a “soft landing” and exports are more stable.
In the future, differences will be discussed first and then sanctioned, and taxes and restrictions will no longer be raised at will. Main export categories such as electric vehicles, photovoltaics, and home appliances are expected to reduce barriers and reduce compliance costs.

Secondly, investment is smoother and orders are flowing back.
The mechanism covers the two-way dimension of trade + investment. Chinese companies investing in Europe and EU companies investing in China will obtain a fairer and more transparent business environment and stabilize the industrial and supply chains.
Finally, stabilizing foreign trade means stabilizing employment and ensuring job security.
China-EU trade has directly created more than 20 million domestic jobs, covering manufacturing, logistics, cross-border e-commerce and other fields.
Exports are stable→Orders increase→Factories do not lay off employees, jobs are safer, and workers in foreign trade have more stable incomes.

The Ministry of Commerce also emphasized that the EU must abide by WTO rules and oppose protectionism; if the EU insists on imposing discriminatory restrictions, China will resolutely counterattack and will never harm its own interests.
This means: the door to cooperation is open, but the bottom line cannot be touched – if the negotiation is successful, mutual benefit and win-win results will be achieved; if the negotiation cannot be reached, no compromise will be tolerated.

The discussion on the China-EU trade and investment consultation mechanism is a warm current in the cold wave of global trade protection.
For China, this is a key step to stabilize exports, maintain orders, and protect employment; for companies, it is a signal to reduce uncertainty and confidently explore the European market; for workers, it is a good thing for more stable jobs and more guaranteed income.
We look forward to the early implementation of the mechanism, allowing China-EU economic and trade to return to the main channel of “win-win cooperation”!
