Automation major in 2026: Core of Industry 4.0, employment prospects are bright

2026年作为十五五开局之年,制造业大力推进智改数转,自动化专业成为工科热门。它以控制理论为核心,打通多领域,人才缺口大,就业前景佳,兼具稳定与高薪。

2026 is the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan. The manufacturing industry has comprehensively promoted intelligent and digital transformation, and the automation major has become the “all-round panacea” for engineering. The number of applications has increased by 15% year-on-year, ranking among the top three popular majors.
Unlike electrical, which specializes in electric power, electronic information, which is deeply involved in chip communications, and pure AI, where the threshold is too high, automation is centered on control theory and connects the four major sectors of machinery, circuits, programming, and robotics. It is the only bottom-level supporting major for Industry 4.0, humanoid robots, and smart factories. The talent gap in the entire industry exceeds 5 million. State-owned enterprises, new energy, and robotics companies are rushing to recruit people. It is stable and high-paying, and is suitable for candidates in all segments.

The explosion of two core tracks has created a massive number of jobs.
Intelligent manufacturing/Industry 4.0 is an urgent need for all factories. In 2026, the scale of the domestic intelligent manufacturing market will exceed 5.58 trillion yuan, and millions of manufacturing companies across the country will initiate production line automation transformation.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, recruitment for industrial control, production line integration, and digital twin positions increased by 38.7% year-on-year.
The core positions of automation graduates include PLC engineers, production line automation designers, MES system debugging, industrial vision development, etc., covering all industries such as automobiles, 3C electronics, new energy batteries, heavy industry, and food processing.
BYD, CATL, Inovance Technology, Sany Heavy Industry and other companies recruit large numbers of students all year round. The comprehensive annual salary for fresh undergraduates is 120,000 to 150,000. After mastering the ability to debug independent projects in 3 to 5 years, the annual salary is stable at 250,000 to 400,000. The longer the technical qualifications are, the more valuable they are. There is no 35-year-old optimization crisis.
Traditional manufacturing industries have eliminated manual assembly lines, and unmanned factories and flexible production lines have become standard equipment. Every factory requires an automation technical team. The employment base is extremely stable and is not affected by the fluctuations of a single industry cycle.

Robots have exploded across the industry, and humanoid robots have opened up their salary caps.
Automation is the underlying core major of industrial robots, service robots, and special robots. Robot motion control, collaborative scheduling, and precise positioning all rely on self-control principles and motor drag courses.
In terms of industrial robots, companies such as SIASUN, Eston, and KUKA are in urgent need of system integration engineers who are responsible for robotic arm programming and production line implementation; new energy vehicle-mounted robots include autonomous driving chassis control and production line sorting robots; high-end special robots such as medical surgical robots, military inspections, and exoskeleton robots, and the salary premium for R&D positions is extremely high.
The total salary for fresh graduates in robot control and motion algorithm positions with a master’s degree is RMB 180,000 to RMB 300,000. The annual salary of senior R&D personnel with 5 years of experience can exceed RMB 500,000. The upper limit for core positions in leading companies is RMB 600,000+.

Employment is guaranteed in both directions, with stable positions in central enterprises and high-paying private positions.
The advantage of automation is that there are no limitations on the track. Stability and high salary can be pursued in parallel, and the fault tolerance rate is far higher than that of a single engineering track.
Central state-owned enterprises have a stable track with complete benefits. Power systems such as the State Grid and the five major power generation groups are recruiting smart grid automation and energy storage control positions. They belong to the general engineering category of the power grid. The competition is less than pure electrical. The annual salary for undergraduates is 10 –
160,000, with six insurances and two funds; heavy industry/military state-owned enterprises such as China Ordnance, CSSC, China Railway, and CRRC, the jobs are geared towards equipment automation and rail transit signaling, the work pace is gentle, and the settlement and housing subsidies are complete; the production lines of petrochemical and pharmaceutical state-owned enterprises have self-controlled operation and maintenance, with few shifts and a comfortable working environment.
The private high-paying track has a high salary ceiling. New energy vehicle companies, industrial robots, industrial control equipment, and photovoltaic energy storage companies are high-paying gathering places. The value of middle-aged manufacturing technical positions continues to increase, and the older they get, the more popular they become.
In addition, there are many options for undergraduate students to pursue advanced studies in automation, which can be transferred to strong power grids, chip hardware, AI algorithms, etc. The threshold for cross-examination is much lower than that of traditional engineering subjects. The national average undergraduate employment rate is as high as 97.1%, and the postgraduate study rate of double first-class universities exceeds 55%.

Compared with other popular engineering subjects, automation has obvious advantages.
It has the widest coverage and is not locked into a single industry. It combines software and hardware and is suitable for multiple fields. It has a friendly academic qualification threshold, and you can get a high-quality offer with a bachelor’s degree. It is in line with the long-term policy dividends of new quality productivity. In the next ten years, industrial investment will continue to increase, and the talent gap will not shrink in the short term. The courses are interoperable and the cost of changing careers is extremely low.
However, the automation major also has objective shortcomings. The course span is large, and students with weak mathematical and physical foundations are under greater learning pressure; first-line production line debugging positions occasionally require short-distance business trips and factory stays; and the salary ceiling for pure equipment operation and maintenance positions is low.
It is more suitable for candidates who have a solid foundation in physics, strong practical skills, do not want to be restricted by a single industry, want a stable retreat from state-owned enterprises, and want to hit the high-paying tracks of new energy and robotics.

Relying on the dual dividends of Industry 4.0 and the robotics industry, automation has become a treasure engineering discipline that takes into account employment breadth, stability, and salary potential in 2026 with its all-round adaptability, and its overall cost-effectiveness ranks firmly in the first echelon.
