On June 17, the board of directors of Sailun Tire (601058.SH) reviewed and approved a proposal to invest US$1.141 billion in a tire production capacity improvement project in Egypt. This huge investment not only pushes the company’s overseas layout to a new height, but also tests the strategic resilience of China’s manufacturing industry from “product exports” to “production capacity overseas” under the background of the China-Egypt zero-tariff policy taking effect. The project is positioned to radiate the African, Middle Eastern and European markets, but practical challenges such as insufficient local supply chain support and institutional differences in Egypt have added uncertainty to its globalization game.
